There are nearly 20 million Americans that currently live in mobile homes. These consist of travel trailers, 5th Wheels, park models, manufactured homes, and wood sheds. The last one, wood sheds, are growing option for the tiny house movement as these are already pre-built shells of a house. All one needs to do is to install the insulation, drywall, flooring, and fixtures for a kitchen area, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. South Carolina has one of the highest rates of mobile home population in the country. Roughly 18% to 20% of the population lives in mobile homes. This number is expected to increase over the next five years as more people join in on the tiny house movement.
The tiny house movement is where many Americans are choosing to downsize the space that they live in. The typical American home is 2,600 sq. ft and costs $300,000 and up. Most families only use a fraction of this space. The remaining space that is not used is money that is wasted.
So cost is the number one factor in choosing to join in the tiny house movement. The second factor is the freedom of owning their home and in some cases their property, and being able to do whatever they want on it, such as eliminating the electric company and putting solar panels on your property. With electric bills soaring for most people, solar energy is a growing area for many home owners because it is free. You cannot charge for use of the sun to provide energy to your home. You can charge to install and setup the solar panels in your home, and that is the extent of that.
To join in on the tiny house movement, you first need to find a lot of land for sale. There are plenty of available lots in the unincorporated areas of your county to buy. Second, you have to decide what type of tiny house you want to build. The options consist of travel trailer, 5th wheel, shipping container, or a wood shed. Let’s assume that you choose a travel trailer for instance. I like this option because I can find an abandoned travel trailer for around $2,000 that will need some TLC. Once I purchase this travel trailer, I can place it on the lot, take the tires off, level the trailer, tie down the trailer with anchors, and put a skirt around the base. Then you can use cement to make a concrete patio that goes all the way around the trailer. You can add a covered patio to that concrete that goes around the trailer. At some point, you can later decide whether you want to easily enclose this covered patio to become additional rooms. When everything is complete, you can easily have yourself a single family home for around $50,000.
